Natural Medicine is a Part of Integrative Medicine

Doctor Nataliya M. Kushnir, MD, FAAAAI, TCMD

DR. NATALIYA M. KUSHNIRNatural medicine is a part of integrative medicine – that is a strong believe that our Doctor brings through her everyday work. Dr Nataliya Kushnir has truly unusual and amazing path in medicine. At the age of 16 she was the youngest medical student ever accepted to the top Russian Medical School (Voronezh Medical Academy). Simultaneously she entered a four year study for the Tibetan Master of Medicine. She achieved impossible – in 1994 she graduated with Honors as Medical Doctor and also as a Master and Instructor in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

She moved to the US to continue her studies and medical research at Stanford. After  2 years she co-authored a paper about glutathion role, and finished externship at Lucile Packard Childrens hospital at Stanford. Then she moved to Nevada to complete Residency training by 2002.

She received Immunology and Allergy education and training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. During the next 3 years she stayed on faculty as Clinical Investigator.  At the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

she conducted multiple studies in the laboratory and clinical trials.

Since childhood Dr Kushnir was fascinated by the mind ability to influence the body and affect health. Her cutting-edge research is amazing. She was first to find a true evidence that brain cells and immune cells communicate through hormone serotonin. During the 3 years as Clinical Investigator she was also consulting patients with rare genetic disorders. Also she  became and expert in diagnosis and management of Mastocytosis. Dr Kushnir published 10 papers in the major clinical and scientific journals, wrote a chapter in medical textbook and many editorials for Wikepedia. More than 20 national and international conferences invited her as a speaker. She is a member of international research and Web of Science.

Dr Kushnir’s passion for healing and wellness that brought her to the next daring decision – she opened private clinic in Berkeley, CA. A disappointment in modern medicines and insurance-driven 5 min appointments led her to the next step. She founded an Institute of Integrative Immunology. A fantastic team of gifted and inspired by the same idea practitioners is constantly growing. We are making the world happier and healthier!

At the Institute we unite all modern knowledge of science with ancient knowledge of healing. We use best modern diagnostic techniques combined with the ancient art of listening, irido-diagnostics and energy flow techniques. Our practitioners offer functional healing, acupressure techniques, medical hypnotherapy, herbal treatments and medical massage. Doctor truly believes in healing powers of mind and biofeedback techniques.

Dr Kushnir is a big advocate of healthy environment. She believes that invisible toxic exposures such as mold, VOC (formaldehyde, resins, fast glues and counter sealants) are ruining immune system and causing multiple health issues. Our team works with environmental companies. We  fights for the rights of people who were harmed by unhealthy living or working conditions. In our Institute we offer expert evaluation and helps her patients to recover from damaging exposures and stress.

Dr Kushnir strongly believes that our body is an amazing creation that can achieve anything, even seemingly impossible – only if we find the right way. When she studied stem cells, she found that we know very little about regenerative forces embedded in our structure. In her experiments she found absolute confirmation that almost any disease can be cured and almost any injury can heal – only if we switch on the process of self-repair. Such force exist in every person, and can be awakened by finding the right diet, herbal tea, exercise and with the help of meditation and energy even the cancer can be cured!

Dr Kushnir is proud Patient’s choice award of 2008-2010 recipient. She is invited as a speaker at the major specialty conferences. She is dedicated community educator – she gives free lectures at the local hospitals and schools. One of the recent web publication in WebMD describes Rhinitis induced by medicines.

A scientist in mind and a doctor in my heart…  The highest standards of the academic medicine and research is what I learned and bring into my work. My team is committed to deliver best science of clinical medicine to the community. I am a big believer in power of education. And I teach my patients everything I know. After all these years of medical studies in Eastern and Western Medicine, I merged them into a unique style and vision of my own. I follow the canons and traditions that started with Hippocrates. Modern science of medicine provides us with the best discoveries and technology, yet it becomes nothing without personal touch and humanitarianism.

O Observe and listen – simple and yet essential rules of making the diagnosis. I do not look into computer screen and only briefly write – by the time I am done talking to my patients I usually know the diagnosis. I never dismiss complaints – I feel that if my patient talks about issues – they do exist.

T Thorough but mindful – I order tests only when I need to confirm diagnosis. I do not believe in extensive and unnecessary testing – it creates more anxiety and brings little information.

S Simplicity and balance – those are two things that guide me in any treatment recommendations. If I can do it – my patients can do it. Disease can be viewed as an out-of-balance condition, and the treatment should directed toward achieving health – state of balanced functioning.

L Learn and teach – that is my job. As simple as it sounds – it is one of the biggest challenges that I face – in our modern world it is hard to coach my patients on the right choices. That work of reviewing hundreds of articles, books, websites and other sources is sometimes harder then following specialty medical news. I need to make sure that each of my recommendations is supported by studies and solid expertise. The job of my patients is also hard – they must comply with my recommendations and regimen. Our jobs a happy when the effort are combined – is is my greatest reward when my patients become healthy again.

E Earth bound – humans are a part of biosphere which has its own laws of existence. Even in a modern world we cannot forget about it. We actually should be more conscious about that now. We start understanding that the way we act with nature gets us back, sometimes in an ugly way. Global climate change is just the most visible result of our careless behaviors. As allergists we observe an unusual increase in allergies and asthma dated back only to 20th century since we started utilizing “modern” necessities and conveniences – polyesters, resins, parabens, polymers, sulfates etc. I believe while creating modern life style we are destroying our immune system from inside and outside – chemicals in the water, food, antibacterial soaps, air pollution. Allergy is not a disease of its own – it is a result of the hyperreaction of immune system overwhelmed with massive intrusion of unnatural foreign particles.

I have never been a supporter of medications as a treatment choice – only rarely it is necessary to prescribe antibiotics or an inhaler and in a short-term course that get the disease under control – the rest can be taken care of in a natural way. I advocate for prevention, focus on a healthy natural diet and modify the environment. Back to nature? you will ask. Yes 1000 times!
